How does a Siberian Husky dog look like?
Article was written by Kim Mei for a job purpose, source of info is collected from various sites throughout the internet.
What do we Siberian Husky look like?
Some people say we originated from the wolf packs, some say we look almost like the Alaskan Malamute dog breed. But in actual fact we share the same genetics as the Spitz breed. A breed of dog that rather resembles wolf but smaller in size.
We come in many colours, which can range from our fur colour, our paw colour, our nose colour to our eye colour. Our fur colour has a mixture of two colours. It can range from black and white , to copper brown with white. But the most common colours are black and white, copper- red with white, gray with white and pure white too! Our facial markings also differ. Some of us , have a round circular marking around our eyes, which makes us look really fierce, some of us just have a converging line coming down our forehead. Because of our unique face markings, it give us different looks, like the kind look , the fierce look, the adorable yet innocent look.
Because we are originated in the Arctic region , so our pigmentation tend to be a bit uneven, which is a form of albino in animals. Called the heterochromia, it is actually a common occurrence in our species because of where we come from. But it does not affect our health. The heterochromia are very obvious in our eye colour & nose, which means some of us may have 1 eye blue and the other eye brown and some of us may have what people call “snow nose” or “winter nose”.Meaning our nose is half black with certain areas having flesh like colour, mostly seen on the front portion of our nose.
Our fur coat is very thick compared to other dogs. We have 2 layers of fur. Why? Because our ancestors originated in the Arctic region so we need very thick coat of fur to keep warm. Our clothes are just like the clothes humans wear to keep themselves warm. One amazing fact about our fur is that our fur are able to keep us surviving in temperatures of -50 to -60. Plus,do you know though that our fur is so thick, but yet in the summer it reflects off heat as well?
Now you know why we do not get over heated during summers in the Arctic .
We’re not really considered a small dog breed nor a big dog breed, but in between. Our male clan are mostly in the height range of 53- 60 cm on when on four paws. Our female clan on the other hand, can grow to a range of 51- 56 cm tall when on four paws too.
How heavy are we? If you would wanna compare, I would say we are about the weight of an average 7 year old child. With the males at 20-27 KG, the females at 16-23 KG.
We can live as long as any dog breeds, which is 12- to 15 of humans years, if you multiply it with 7, which is the number of dog years in 1 human year. You will get 105 years. We can live up to 105 years old in dog years! That’s a long life ain’t it .
Siberian Husky dogs that are famous in movies
Article was written by Kim Mei for a job purpose, source of info is collected from various sites throughout the internet.
Not really sure if anyone took a notice at how big a start the Siberian Huskies have become. There are a few movies out there where the main acting star is actually a Siberian Husky dog.
Here are few great movies with Siberian Huskies starring in it.
Eight Below is a year 2006 film. The plotline of the story is as of below.
After an antartic guide and his charge are rescued from a deadly storm by a team of eight sled dogs, they are forced to temporarily evacuate their base, leaving the dogs chained behind so they will not break fre and get lost.
“The temporary evacuation becomes permanent (through the winter season) and the guide becomes fixated on returning to the dogs, not knowing if they are dead or alive.
We switch back and forth between the guide's story of lonelines mixed with determination, and the dogs, over a period of close to six months/ All but one of the dogteam (an older dog) have broken free, and go searching for food. A second dog is lost to a fall, and a third -- the guide's favorite, leader of the pack, and apparently most cunning of the bunch -- is injured in a fight with a leopard seal. We see the dogs learn to hunt and survive.
The final act of the movie shows the guide, his would-be-girldfriend pilot, and two other explorers wangle an expedition via ice-cutter, helicopter, and snowcat (a large muti-section tracked vehicle for high-speed snow travel). They retrun to the orignal base, find the five healthy dogs, and just barely find the near-dead sixth dog.”

Where does the Siberian Husky originate from?

Origins of The Husky Dog
Dogs have been man’s best friend since the dawn of times. Humans have since have many choices in terms of species of dogs to choose from as different species of dogs possesses distinct personality. From a guardian to a companion, like a German Shepherd to a Shih Tzu.
One particular dog breed stands out and has been stealing the spotlights of Hollywood. Word has it that it came from a snowy land. I’m pretty sure in everyone’s mind right now, the name “Siberian Husky” would pop out. If you’ve guessed that ,then you are right!
The Siberian Husky have come a long way, they originated from the same place where Chukchi people lived, which is Siberia, the North Eastern side of Asia. Hence the name Siberian Husky. The term “husky” actually was a mutation from the word “Eskie” which is what the Europeans used to call a tribe of people, called the “ Inuits” when they went on an expedition to the Arctic.
Genetically ,Siberian huskies fall under the breed of dogs called “Spitz”,which has bushy fur, pointed ears and their tails are curled upwards towards the back of the dog’s body. Though genetically they are from the Spitz family line, but they are medium in size, capable of being more than just a companion for men. The fact that they are mostly found in the Arctic region, is most likely due to the thickness of their fur, which are lined closely and pack are able to keep them warm in those extreme cold weather conditions of the Arctic region.
Thus, people in the Siberia often used them as sled dogs to help aid in men’s daily life. In fact, they have long since been used as sled dogs .It’s because they can cover long distance travelling on a very small amount of food. That shows how great their stamina are. Not only were the Siberian Husky used for transportation, but they also have a sled dog competition from time to time to see which Husky was the fastest runner.
The first big race was in Alaska, whereby the Siberian Huskies were imported into Alaska as a sled dog in the “All Alaska Sweepstakes” which is a race from Nome to Candle, to and fro using sled dogs. In the 1930’s, two things made a huge change in the dog breed of Siberian Husky. First the commonly known sled dogs are exported out of Siberia. Secondly, they were formally recognised by the American Kennel Club.
Because of the dog’s potential as a sled dog in the cold arctic regions, many people found that rather useful, and they were breeding these dogs to be exported for sled dog races, for rescue aid missions in the Arctic, for means of transportation in the Arctic and so on. That is the start of their breed dominating the world with their charm to prove effortlessly that they are able to travel long journeys in the Arctic condition, making rescue missions possible, making transportation possible and also accompanying mankind on their mission or expedition in the Arctic.
Thus, whenever you mention about Siberia, you will never fail to hear the name Siberian husky that will often be associated with it. And now because of their popularity, you can find them all over the world more of a house hold pet than a sled dog. But no worries, if you wanna see a Husky live in action as a sled dog , just travel up to the Arctic and you can see them still being used for easier mode of getting from point A to point B.

How does a Siberian Husky act?
Behaviour of a husky dog!
Someone once told me, when you choose a dog, you must choose it for their personality or behaviour. Not by how cute or fierce they look. Because a dog is men’s best friend, and your best friend is your best friend is due to the fact that you both click very well in terms of personalities and behaviour. Wise words indeed.
If you are looking for a companion, a Siberian Husky would top up as one of the choice breed to look for.By nature, they are really gentle dogs, and also shows a sort of childlike eagerness when around humans. This is because they have a puppy like personality in them all through their life. This also makes them to be known as the “clown of the dogs” as they constantly love to fool around and make themselves look silly.
Siberian Huskies do not bark like normal dogs do. Instead they howl, more of a wolf trait, since they are closely link to the wolfs .But the Siberian Huskies only howl when they are bored or not given any attention. They do have another form of howling which is like singing. This only happens when the Siberian Huskies are in the right mood. You will know when it happens when you see a Siberian Husky lifting his head upwards towards the moon and make a howl which is long and with tunes.
Other than that, these dogs are also known to be an intelligent breed. What amazes people is their capability to mimic us, humans in our simple daily house routines. Example, a husky is able to pull down a door handle to open doors and also use its paw to turn lights off or on. Other unique intelligence of theirs is their ability to escape. They are able to crawl into small holes without any problem, wriggle out of their chain or leash with ease.
Now, I know dogs are always represented with an image of digging soil, that is why everyone’s pre conception of any dog is that they will dig! This does not exclude the Siberian Husky, but the level on how frequent a dog digs is also different in all dog breeds. Well, all we could say is that, Siberian Huskies are born diggers, they are like a digging machine. Just imagine, a Siberian Husky can create a crater of 1 feet in just less than one minute. Now that’s fast!
They also have a hunting instinct in their blood. Those who keep them as house pets are to be aware that they may surge out of their captive zone when taking out for exercise. Plus with their excellent speed in running, they will be pretty hard to catch up to once released. On another account, the Siberian Huskies are more of a nomad, which means they are able to adapt to new areas easily. More of a carefree kind of dog, they couldn’t really be aware that whether they are in danger or not, I guess this is partly they bold side of them.
Everyone loves their dogs when their dogs tend to listen to their commands and obey to their master’s every word. This is what we call obedience. Most dogs are able to be trained to be obedient, but certain dogs are rather hard. Like the Siberian Husky, certain people claim they aren’t obedient, but in fact they can be, if with persistent everyday training to make them tame down.
Loveable , affectionate, friendly.. able to play with kids, if you have any.. I bet these 3 are the most common words that you hear when you hit to an adoption centre or a pet shop. The Siberian Husky dog will be the one you are looking for if you are opting more of a playmate sort of dog. Because of their friendly nature, they tend to welcome everyone they see with open arms, with open arms I mean jumping on them to give them a big wet lick on the face. They love to be around people. That is the main reason people tend to warn Siberian Huskies owner not to treat their Huskies as guard dogs, as they really make a lousy guard by welcoming the intruder instead of stopping them.
Every heard of curiosity kills the cat? Well I think here the victim would be a husky. Why do I say so? Naturally, Huskies are born curious, once they pick up a scent so interesting, they will do everything to get to know what the source is. It’s really useful that they’ve got such curiosity, but for Husky owners, it would be a nightmare ,as their dog will wonder off with that scent!
Thus this sums up what are the behaviour of a regular husky. So what do you think about them? I bet it gave you a rather enlightening insight to what they are like. Never could you imagine that a dog which looks resembles a wolf, would be in fact so friendly to the extent that it is unfit to a guard dog. But nevertheless, it is still a dog of many wonders.
